Proper Candle Care

If you love candles, keep them burning longer and safer by following these tips:

Always remember a lit candle is fire.

Before you burn your candle for the first time, trim the wick to 1/4 inch using a wick trimmer.  Keeping your wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch is important because longer wicks create longer flames which burn hotter and consume your candle faster.  Longer flames also create more smoke and can turn your jars black.

Our full size candles are about 3 1/2 inches in diameter, you can expect a candle to burn about 1 inch in diameter per hour.  Don't burn a candle unless you have the time to allow the surface of the candle to melt, glass to glass, or about 4 hours.  A candle has a memory and will create a sink hole if you extinguish it before it has melted completely; this is most often the problem when a candle isn't burning correctly.

Discontinue burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Burning the candle below 1/2 inch can cause excessive heat on the glass, potentially causing the glass to shatter. Our wicks have a safety feature that doesn't allow them to be lit once they reach this point.  Gold Canyon has factored this 1/2 inch of wax into our burn time calculations and candle volume measurements.

You should never blow out the flame or smother it with the lid, this will also cause black smoke and soot on your jars. Use a wick dipper, to extinguish your candles, dip the wick into the melted wax and then straighten it.  There will be no residual smoke and it will coat the wick with enough wax, making it easier to light the next time.

Although Gold Canyon Candles burn at a low temperature and will not cause a burn if spilled on your skin, always keep your candles out of reach of children and pets.
